I started to write at an age of about ten. Initially little songs and poems, and small stories for the school journal and periodicals of clubs, and then, rather suddenly, became the author of more serious stuff, such as a Ph.D. thesis and scientific papers. Yet, I continued to like writing, perhaps even more than doing research. I therefore accepted an invitation by the British publisher T & AD Poyser to write a book on ruffs and started to participate in writing courses for the Open Universiteit. Colleagues and students appreciated my chapters, and thus I was asked for more jobs. A very cool one was the column in the department periodical, three times a year. Parts of the courses I made were published as books for bookshops. After my retirement, I published two other books (both in Dutch): 'Hoe rekbaar is onze planeet?' (How extensible is our planet?) in autumn 2010, for a broad audience, and 'Darwins Dating Show' in spring 2013.
